Roofing shingles are installed then cut and sealed where they overlap the metal channel. An open metal lined valley properly installed is functionally better long term. Metal valley does not extend more than 8 outward from the valley whereas shingles can go as far out as you want them to. I m sure they are there for a good reason.

This is almost the same as the closed roof valley method except a pre bent metal valley lining is installed instead of a secondary roof underlayment. With a clean valley you can lay down some peel and stick roofing membrane. An open valley relies on metal flashing for protection. That flashing is left exposed so the roof has visible lines of metal running down the valley.

Contractors may be able to reduce the cost of materials on roofing projects by eliminating the metal being installed in the valleys. After the underlayment is placed a pre bent metal valley lining is installed. The metal is usually pre painted to best complement the shingles color blend. Fold the top over the roof ridge and cut the bottom along the drip edge metal.

A closed valley may be just fine given the budget and type of roof. Once the shingles are installed they don t run through the valley area. In a closed valley shingles wrap from one side of the valley to another. The following photos illustrate removal and replacement of a closed cut valley with new open metal valley shingles being removed in closed cut valley.

Some homeowners do not like the look of open valleys while others feel the metal accentuates the roof s shape particularly if copper or painted flashing is used. For an open valley a sheet of metal usually steel sometimes copper is fastened to the roof deck. Apply two beads of roofing cement to attach the top layer shingles to the bottom layer shingles. Open valleys on the other hand leave the metal exposed which may be more pleasing to the eye especially if copper is used as the valley lining.

All shingles removed from closed cut valley. From a more opinionated viewpoint an open metal lined valley has a cleaner and more appealing look. This metal lining can be made of any type of metal that is resistant to the effects of weather acid rain or other contaminants. When compared to a closed valley and open valley adds an additional layer of lining. This leaves a metal strip or line on the surface of the roof that serves as the valley line.
