Nullarbor Railway Siding

The nullarbor plain is renowned worldwide for its vast number of limestone caves and water filled subterranean channels many still unexplored.

At eucla we turn north west and fly over the nullarbor before landing at forrest on the trans australian railway line. As the only rail freight corridor between western australia and the eastern states the line is strategically important. The only passenger train to traverse the entire railway the indian pacific stops at cook rawlinna seasonally and on the nullarbor plain as part of the outback experience around which the train is marketed. From the nullarbor roadhouse proceed out on the old eyre highway which will run almost parallel to the main highway for some distance before starting to head in a northeast direction.

The siding it located at the 777 kilometer on the trans australia railway line. At the required waypoint to leave the old eyre highway the track will now be a two wheel track all the way to watson and there are no signposts anywhere along this track. Forrest has a population of five once you arrive and sits on the longest straight stretch of railway line in the world. This siding takes its name from mundrabilla station the first sheep station on the nullarbor established in 1872. Station buildings and most infrastructure has been dismantled at the 50 localities. Beginning at a nondescript road siding about 20 kilometres west of the roadhouse there is a dirt track of about 10 kilometres leading to the cave.
